Bayside Sharks Senior Men Update

Welcome to the 2023/24 Bayside Senior Men’s Rugby Season! We kicked things off on August 17th with our pre-season training, but the party actually got started on August 12th with the annual Bayside 7s. The senior men were able to enter 3 teams (1 elite and 2 social) to take on competition from around the province to shake off the rust from the summer break. New coaches, Jared Howes and Liam Beaulieu have brought a fantastic breath of fresh air with new ideas and increased pace to the sessions. The men are also putting in the extra work needed to be competitive on the field by participating in strength and conditioning sessions once a week with Bayside Alumni Joanna and Eric Sugawara at KEA Athletics. We are excited to offer this to our players as part of their registration dues and look forward to seeing how it can contribute to our results on the field.

The men have been building towards regular season games kicking off Oct.14th by playing some tough competition in the exhibition. First up, the sharks took on our friends from the valley with Abbotsford Rugby Club providing a great test and Vancouver Rowing Club the following weekend. Both games were a combined format of Division 1 and Division 3 players taking the field. This coming weekend the sharks swim up the Coquihalla to face off against Kelowna RFC in what will be a great afternoon of rugby followed by some team building with a night on the town.

Once September comes to a close, the senior men will turn their attention to regular season competition that will last until the end of April. We encourage all players, from all walks of life to come give rugby a try and embrace everything that the club has to offer. Whether that’s enjoying the views from the patio as a social member or dusting off the boots and taking the field, we look forward to seeing you out there. Please connect with Taylor Howes (Senior Men’s Director) if you have any questions.

Bayside Sharks Senior Women Update

Hold onto your scrum caps because the women’s program is back in action, and we’ve got some thrilling updates for you! Picture this: our fall campaign kicked off with not one, but two pre-season games against Abbotsford RFC and Simon Fraser University RFC. It was like a rugby rollercoaster, with more twists and turns than a muddy field after a rainstorm.

Now, let’s talk results. Against Abbotsford, well, we’ll call it a “learning experience” as we walked away with just one loss. But when it came to Simon Fraser University, we showed them that we’re not just rugby players; we’re rugby magicians, pulling off a big win that left them scratching their heads.

Our practices started back in early August, and let me tell you, they’ve been like boot camp for unicorns – magical! We’ve welcomed some fresh faces to the team, and a few old-timers decided to dust off their boots after a brief vacation. Shoutout to those superwomen who became moms and then decided to return to the field; you’re our real MVPs!

Coaching-wise, we’re still under the expert guidance of Rob Verrelli and Trevor France. The continuity in coaching has been smoother than a perfectly executed pass. This year, we’ve decided to focus on our Division 1 team and skip the second-team shenanigans. What does that mean? More depth in positions than in a submarine, and players dancing around the field like nobody’s business.

So, as we gear up for the regular season, get ready for some more rugby magic. We’re not just chasing tries; we’re chasing dreams, both on and off the field.

Stay tuned for more action, laughs, and maybe a few accidental mudslides – it’s all part of the fun!

  • What technical areas will be coached: We will start with catch pass, running lines, foot work with the goal of adding more tools to players attacking games.  Phase two we will work on the contact areas, body position, ruck speed, clearing threats, tackling and poaching.
